DETAILED ITINERARY

Kanazawa is the capital city of Ishikawa Prefecture; the city’s name translates to “marsh of gold” due to a legend that the peasant Imohori Togoro washed gold dust in a local mash. Rightfully so, the city is rich in traditional crafts, nature and cuisine. It also led the development of high cultures and activities such as Kanazawa gold leaf and Kaga Yuzen. Kanazawa is a city where past and present coexist, since the city was not harmed during WWII many streets and neighbourhoods still remain the same. These streets merge together with present day Kanazawa of new buildings and structures.

We start our journey at a location of your choice within Kanazawa. After picking you up in one of our luxurious private vehicles, we will drive you through some truly spectacular views towards the three destinations of your choice.

Option 01: Omicho Market

Feel like a local and visit Kanazawa’s largest fresh food market.  Be in awe of the colorful streets, lined by over 200 shops and stalls, selling excellent quality of seafood, meats, produce and flowers.

Option 02: Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Garden

Situated in the middle of the city stands the Kanazawa Castle. Once the seat of the powerful Maeda Clan over the Kaga Domain, which was the wealthiest han of the Edo period. Famed for its expansive residence, it was also known to be the Palace of 1,000 Tatami Mats.

Kenrokuen Garden is a beautiful Japanese garden with an area of 11.4 hectares located on the heights of the central part of Kanazawa and next to Kanazawa Castle. From its scale and beauty, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful feudal lords’ gardens in Japan.

Option 03: Suzuki Daisetsu Museum

The D.T. Suzuki Museum is a small museum commemorating the life and works of Suzuki Daisetz Teitaro (1870-1966), a prominent Buddhist philosopher. The museum was opened in 2011 in the district of Kanazawa where Suzuki was born, a ten minute walk from Kenrokuen. On display are exhibitions showcasing the writings of D.T. Suzuki which allow the visitor to learn more about his life and philosophy. In addition, the architecture of the museum serves as an interpretation of D.T. Suzuki’s life and religious scholarship; its use of clean, simple lines and open spaces causes visitors to pause and reflect.

Option 04: Terashima Kurando House

Kurando Terashima, who lived from 1777 to 1837, was a middle class samurai retainer to the ruling Maeda family. Since 1974 his house and garden have been preserved as an important cultural property of the city and they are open to the public as a museum. This beautiful building provides a rare glimpse into the elegant home life of Kanazawa samurai families in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. You will find the wooden house on a quiet back street surrounded by high earthern walls. Once inside you will feel like you have stepped back in time.
