DETAILED ITINERARY
Destination 01: Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple

Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple Discover Historical Sites in Tokyo Private Package Tour

Tsukiji Honganji Temple is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhism temple located only 1 min away from the famous Tsukiji Fish Market (Tsukiji Outer Market) in Tokyo. It was originally built in 1617 under the direct control of Nishi Honganji Temple in Kyoto. In 1934, the main hall of the temple was re-constructed with a motif of ancient Indian architecture. The cool and unique appearance of the temple attract numbers of visitors today. Tsukiji Honganji Temple is definitely one of the most photo-worthy temples in Tokyo.

Destination 02: Nikolai Cathedral

Nikolai Cathedral Discover Historical Sites in Tokyo Private Package Tour

The present church dates from 1929 as the previous building (first built in 1891) was partially destroyed by the tremors and a later fire in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The cathedral is commonly known as Nikolai-do after Saint Nicholas of Japan, the Russian-born Ivan Dimitrovich Kasatkin (1836-1912), who came to Hakodate in Hokkaido in 1860 and spent the rest of his life, including the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) spreading Orthodox Christianity in Japan and raising funds for the cathedral.

Destination 03: Ueno Toshogu Shrine

Ueno Toshogu Shrine Discover Historical Sites in Tokyo Private Package Tour

Ueno Toshogu Shrine was built in 1616 and is one of numerous shrines across the country that are dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo Shogunate. The Ueno Toshogu Shrine used to be incorporated into Kaneiji Temple until 1868. The shrine’s Botan Garden is open from January to mid February and from mid April to early May (700 yen).

Destination 04: Kaneiji Temple

Kaneiji Temple Discover Historical Sites in Tokyo Private Package Tour

During the Edo Period Kaneiji Temple was one of the largest and wealthiest temples in the city. It was destroyed during the Boshin War, and remnants of the original temple complex, such as its five storied pagoda and Toshogu Shrine, are scattered around the park. The current Kaneiji is a relatively unremarkable, small temple located in a quiet neighborhood near the northwest corner of Ueno Park.
