DETAILED ITINERARY

We start off in Nagoya. After picking you up in one of our luxurious private vehicles, we will drive you through the three destinations of your choice.

Magome is a post town in the Kiso Valley, which served travelers of the Nakasendo, a major route connecting Tokyo with Kyoto during the Edo Period. The town has been beautifully restored with a broad stone walkway lined with carefully tended foliage. Magome’s embellished preservation contrasts with the rugged authenticity of neighboring Tsumago. The two towns are connected by the Magome-Tsumago Trail, a route which was part of the Nakasendo.

Option 01: Toson Memorial Museum (Magome Area)

Toson Memorial Museum Explore Kisso Valley Private Package Tour

While exploring Magome, visitors will surely come across the name Shimazaki Toson. Born in Magome in 1872, Toson is a highly regarded figure in Japanese literature. In his novel Yoakemae (Before the Dawn), he famously describes life in the area during the early years of the Meiji Restoration. Its often quoted first line reads “The whole of the Kisoji lies in the mountains.

The Honjin was the principal inn of a post town. Toson’s father was the last person to oversee Magome’s Honjin, and Toson himself was born there. Today, it serves as a memorial to the artist.

Entrance fee (separate from tour price, to be purchased on the spot)
Adult: JPY550 per person

Option 02: Wakihonjin Museum

Wakihonjin Museum Explore Kisso Valley Private Package Tour

The Wakihonjin was the secondary inn of a post town. This small museum is located where Magome’s former Wakihonjin once stood. Inside there are displays pertaining to Magome’s history as a Nakasendo post town.

Entrance fee (separate from tour price, to be purchased on the spot)
Adult: JPY300 per person

Option 03: Tsuchimaya Shiryokan

On the second floor, above a souvenir shop and restaurant, this small museum also focuses on Toson and has on display items of his family and the early Meiji Period.

Option 04: Honjin (Tsumago Area)

Honjin Explore Kisso Valley Private Package Tour

Tsumago was a post town on the Nakasendo route between Kyoto and Edo. It is known today as one of the best preserved post towns in Japan. The town and its residents go to great lengths to recreate the ambience of the Edo Period. Tsumago also recreates the post town atmosphere by maintaining its Honjin and Wakihonjin. In all post towns, the Honjin was the principal inn and served government officials who were traveling through.

Entrance fee (separate from tour price, to be purchased on the spot)
Adult: JPY300 per person (JPY700 including Honjin, Wakihonjin, and Rekishi Shiryokan)

Option 05: Wakihonjin (Tsumago Area)

Wakihonjin Explore Kisso Valley Private Package Tour

In contrast to the Honjin, the antiquity of the Wakihonjin is entirely genuine; with the main building dating back to the 19th century. It now serves as a museum, and tours are held in Japanese. On the second floor of one of the complex’ other buildings lies a nicely-done museum with various artifacts and displays relating to the history of the area.

Entrance fee (separate from tour price, to be purchased on the spot)
Adult: JPY600 per person (Wakihonjin and Rekishi Shiryokan)
JPY700 per person (Honjin, Wakihonjin, and Rekishi Shiryokan)

Option 06: Narai Area

Narai Area Explore Kisso Valley Private Package Tour

During the Edo Period, Narai marked the half way point between Kyoto and Edo to travelers along the Nakasendo Route. It was the most wealthy post town of the Kiso Valley, and was sometimes referred to as “Narai of a Thousand Houses”. Visitors will understand this nickname when comparing Narai to the other former post towns in the area; the preserved houses stretch on much longer in Narai than elsewhere.
