Ikebana Art of Flower Arrangement

The Japanese art of flower arrangement, known as Ikebana or Kadō, is considered one of Japan’s traditional arts that can be dated back to the 6th century along with the arrival of Buddhism in Japan. Over the course of history, the art has continuously developed alongside other Japanese art forms, and it has come to be characterized by the Japanese expression wabi-sabi – a word which evokes connotations of minimalism, austerity, imperfections, and the transience of life.

While Western styles of flower arranging tend to focus on color schemes and the flowers themselves, Ikebana focuses on three main structural elements: line, form, and mass. Further, rather than attempting to fill every empty space with color, an Ikebana practitioner will consider the balance of empty space and asymmetry to find a sense of harmony. Ikebana reflects the seasons, utilizing natural materials that include not only flowers, but also grasses, fruits, seeds, and even dried plants.

We proudly invite you to try your hand at Ikebana, discovering the philosophies and aesthetics that lie behind the ancient art that has played a role in the lives of Japanese people for hundreds of years. You will experience the interconnecting ideologies and aesthetics that Ikebana shares with other aspects of Japanese culture while creating your own work of living art. A finished Ikebana composition is said to be a reflection of the person who created it.

Throughout the experience, you will receive private guidance from a multi award-winning artist of Ikebana, an individual who has a wealth of experience not only in creating masterful Ikebana works of art for events, stores and public spaces, but also collaborative on-stage performances of the art form. A member of the renowned Sougetsu School of Ikebana, the artist looks to push the boundaries of flower arranging within our modern lifestyles, pursuing an Ikebana that resonates with the human spirit.
