DETAILED ITINERARY

Kamakura is a coastal town in Kanagawa Prefecture, less than an hour south of Tokyo. The town became the political center of Japan, when Minamoto Yoritomo chose it as the seat for his new military government in the late 12th century. Today, Kamakura is a small city and a very popular tourist destination. Sometimes called the Kyoto of Eastern Japan, Kamakura offers numerous temples, shrines and other historical monuments.

We start off in Tokyo. After picking you up in one of our luxurious private vehicles, we will drive you through some truly spectacular views to the three destinations in Kamakura.

Option 01: Great Buddha Kamakura (Recommended)

Great Buddha Kamakura Kamakura Highlights Private Package Tour

The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which stands on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple. With a height of 11.4 meters, it has long been the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, surpassed only by the statue in Nara’s Todaiji Temple and some recent creations.

The statue was cast in 1252 and originally located inside a large temple hall. However, the temple buildings were destroyed multiple times by typhoons and a tsunami in the 14th and 15th centuries. So, since the late 15th century, the Buddha has been standing in the open air.

Entrance fee to the Kotoku-in temple (separate from tour price, to be purchased on the spot)
Adults: JPY200 per person

*Opening times and fees depend on season

Option 02: Hokokuji (Recommended)

Hokokuji Kamakura Highlights Private Package Tour

If the iconic Sagano Bamboo Grove in Kyoto is not within reasonable distance to include on your travel itinerary, consider visiting the enchanting bamboo garden at Hokokuji Temple in Kamakura. Just an hour south of Tokyo, admire the strength and beauty of 2,000 Moso-bamboo tucked beyond the Zen temple gate. As you make your way up the winding path and manicured gardens, the aroma of the seasonal flowers will instantly soothe you. Calm your senses further with a fresh cup of matcha green tea at the teahouse. The serenity of Hokokuji’s bamboo gardens will immediately transform your being with a peace of mind.

Entrance fee (separate from tour price, to be purchased on the spot)
Adults: JPY200 per person (additional JPY500 for tea service)

*Opening times and fees depend on season

Option 03: Komachi Dori (Recommended)

Komachi Dori Kamakura Highlights Private Package Tour

With humble beginnings as a modest street market centuries ago, the area has transformed into a symphony of shopping and commerce. You can find everything from boutique fashion stores to souvenir gift shops along Komachi-dori, and when the bags get heavy and your feet tired, there are countless cafes, restaurants, cake shops, and bakeries.

Option 04: Hasedera

Hasedera Kamakura Highlights Private Package Tour

Hase-dera, commonly called the Hase-kannon is one of the Buddhist temples in the city of Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, famous for housing a massive wooden statue of Kannon. The temple originally belonged to the Tendai sect of Buddhism, but eventually became an independent temple of the Jōdo shū.

Entrance fee (separate from tour price, to be purchased on the spot)
Adults: JPY400 per person

*Opening times and fees depend on season

Option 05: Tsurugaoka Hachimangu

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Kamakura’s most important shrine. It was founded by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063, and enlarged and moved to its current site in 1180 by Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura government.

The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and of the samurai in general. The deified spirits of the ancient Emperor Ojin who has been identified with Hachiman, Hime-gami and Empress Jingu are enshrined at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.
