DETAILED ITINERARY

We start off in Tonosho Port. After picking you up in one of our luxurious private vehicles, we will drive you through the three destinations of your choice.

Option 01: Shodoshima olive park
Shodoshima olive park Shodoshima Highlights Private Package Tour
Shodoshima is the birth place of olive cultivation in Japan. The island’s Mediterranean climate made it an ideal place for growing olives, which was first succeeded in 1908. Since then the island has been a top producer of Japanese olives and olive oil, and has earned Shodoshima the nickname “Olive Island”. There is also a small museum that teaches visitors about the history of olive cultivation on Shodoshima, as well as a restaurant, cafe and shops where you can sample and buy the various olive related products, such as olive oil, olive candy, olive cosmetics, olive noodles and olive ice cream.

Option 02: Soy sauce village

Soy Sauce Village Shodoshima Highlights Private Package Tour

Shodoshima has a 400 year history of soy sauce production. Today there are about a dozen soy sauce factories concentrated around the Shodoshima town center between Kusakabe Port and Sakate Port, which continue to produce the salty black condiment. Marukin, one of the leading soy sauce companies on the island, maintains a soy sauce museum on its factory grounds. The museum resembles a traditional soy sauce factory, and explains the production process along with all the vats and tools required. The museum has English displays and a gift shop that sells many different varieties of soy sauce.

Entrance fee (separate from tour price, to be purchased on the spot)
Adult: JPY210 per person

Option 03: Kyohotei Tsukudani

Another related product of Shodoshima is tsukudani, small pieces of seafood, meat or other foods, that have been preserved by cooking in a sweet soy sauce and are often enjoyed with a bowl of rice. There are two tsukudani shops near the soy sauce museum.

One of them, Kyohotei Tsukudani, offers free guided tours of their factory next door. The tours take about 20 minutes, are held in Japanese and requires prior reservations.

Option 04: Ittokuan Tsukudani

The other shop, Ittokuan Tsukudani, does not offer factory tours, but they have a nice, well stocked store where you can sample a wide range of different types of tsukudani. The shop also sells moromi soft cream, flavored after the soy bean mash produced during soy sauce fermentation.

Option 05: Angel road

Angle Road Shodoshima Highlights Private Package Tour

Near Tonosho Port is the Angel Road, a sandbar connecting three small islands to Shodoshima. Twice a day during low tide visitors can walk along the sandbar, and it is said that couples who cross the sandbar hand in hand will find happiness together. Some people write their romance related wishes on small wooden plaques and hang them onto a tree branch for the wishes to become true.
