DETAILED ITINERARY

Ginzan Onsen is an onsen (hot spring) area in Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Its name means “silver mine hot spring”. Ginzan Onsen’s economy took off thanks to its booming silver production and eventually transitioned over to tourism when it opened up dozens of hot spring resorts along the central river that runs through the town. The mountains that surround this town yield rich hot spring water that is used both in the private hotels and public baths in the city center.

We start off in Tohoku’s the largest city, Sendai, located just two hour away from Ginzan Onsen. After picking you up in one of our luxurious private vehicles, we will drive you through some truly spectacular views to Ginzan Onsen and one destination of your choice.

MAIN DESTINATION: Ginzan Onsen

Ginzan Onsen Private Package Tour

Ginzan Onsen is a secluded hot spring town nestled in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture. The area originally developed around a silver mine; however, these days it is better known as one of Japan’s prettiest onsen towns with historic ryokan lined up along the river.

The tour then moves onto one of the best spots in Sendai. Guests can choose one destination from the following options:

Option 01: Zuihoden Mausoleum (Recommended)

Zuihoden Mausoleum Private Package Tour

Zuihoden is the mausoleum of Date Masamune, one of the most powerful feudal lords of the Edo Period. Masamune was the first in a long line of Date lords to rule over Sendai from Aoba Castle. His son and grandson, Date Tadamune and Date Tsunamune, are entombed in nearby mausoleums, while other descendants are laid to rest in less elaborate graves and tombs. As the final resting place of the founder of Sendai, Date Masamune, this gorgeous structure is a sight to behold with its brilliant colors including gold and intricate patterns on finely carved sculptures.

Entrance fee (separate from Tour price, to be purchased on the spot)

Adults: JPY550 per person / High School Students: JPY400 / Junior High School Students: JPY200

*Closed on December 31 & January 1

Option 02: Rennoji Temple

Rinnoji Temple Private Package Tour

Rinnoji, lying to the north of Sendai’s downtown, may first appear to be a somewhat unexceptional temple. However, beyond the main hall of the temple is a beautiful Japanese garden and pagoda that are well worth visiting.

Entrance fee (separate from Tour price, to be purchased on the spot)

JPY300 per person

Option 03: The Nikka Whisky Sendai Factory Miyagikyo Distillery

Nikka Whisky Factory Miyagikyo Distillery Sendai Private Package Tour

Founded in 1934 by Suntory’s first master distiller, Nikka has risen to become Japan’s second largest distiller, producing a wide range of single malts as well as their impressive blended whisky range. This distillery distills and stores malt whisky and other beverages. On the one hour tour of the facility, you can watch the manufacturing process and taste the whisky made there.

*Closed over the New Year’s holiday and during distillery shutdowns (some of which are not scheduled in advance). There is a possibility the tour may be cancelled due to bad weather. During mid-winter some facilities cannot be observed. The route of guided tours will also be changed accordingly.
